Beijing, 5th of June, 1989 near Tiananmen Square. A man in a white shirt with a plastic bag in his hand, standing before a tank convoy. The image rounded the earth and became what today constitutes exemplary civil disobedience. The Chinese government attempted to erase the evidence of this massacre of students perpetuated by the military. Still, the events surrounding the period of student unrest are well documented.
Although no one had documented the event in its entirety. I gave the assignment of re-constructing and splicing together the tankman scenes floating on the internet to a company in Peking. The collage shows the scenes almost completely. Afterwards, I sent this collage to another Chinese film company with the following request: Please delete the people. In the second film, only the tank can be seen alone on the street, moving spastically. For the third film, the tank was also removed. The result is a view of the street and an unsteady camera. It's as if there were never anything to see.
Die Bilder des Mannes, der sich im Jahr 1989 in Peking vor einen Panzerkonvoi stellte, gingen um die Welt und sind zu einem Symbol des zivilen Widerstands geworden. Die chinesische Regierung versucht bis heute, das vom Militär verübte Massaker an Studenten von der Bildfläche fernzuhalten.
Dabei sind die Ereignisse rund um die Studentenunruhen gut dokumentiert. Der Mann im weissen Hemd, der sich mit einem Plastiksack in der Hand vor den Panzerkonvoi stellt, ist Gegenstand zahlreicher Filmsequenzen.
Keine jedoch dokumentiert das Geschehen lückenlos. So habe ich eine Filmfirma in Peking beauftragt, die Tankman- Szene aus Internetquellen vollständig zusammenzustellen.
Die daraus entstandene Filmcollage zeigt die Szene beinahe in ihrer vollen Länge. Diese Collage habe ich wiederum einer chinesischen Filmfirma geschickt. Diesmal lautete der Auftrag: Please remove the people. Im zweiten Film ist somit nur der Panzer zu sehen, der auf einer leeren Strasse stehen bleibt und seltsame Bewegungen macht. Im dritten Film wurde auch der Panzer entfernt. Die Bilder zeigen nur noch die Strasse, die Kamera wackelt, und es ist, als gäbe es nichts zu sehen.
